Like most cherished mementos and keepsakes, we hold on to songs forever. We dust them off when we need them, put them back on the shelf, and then rediscover them months or sometimes years later. With his diverse catalog, he’s had song ideas for a solo album in the drawer for some time. The Covid lockdown gave Paich the opportunity to revisit those songs, and the result is a collection of tracks he’s had in mind for years. He says, “It seemed like it was time to put something together. Some of them are really forgotten toys. It’s been a while since I’ve been in my studio, and I found myself listening to these little pieces over and over again. I kept rediscovering them and hoping to put the pieces together like a musical puzzle.”
Even though this is a “solo” album, Paich couldn’t help but invite a few friends to play along. Along with Joseph Williams as co-producer and sometimes co-vocalist, he welcomed everyone from Steve Lukather of Toto to Brian Eno, Michael McDonald, Ray Parker Jr. and Don Felder to Steve Jordan of the Rolling Stones.
The album’s cover artwork is a poetic, nostalgic representation of the concept. It features a variety of memories that Paich’s wife has kept over the years. “I hope this gives everyone a glimpse into another side of me, one they’ve never heard in a musical context.”
Music is the soundtrack of our lives. For David, music is much more than the soundtrack of his life. As one of its architects, it is his life.
